Spear Shafts

Spear shafts are made from 17-4 spring Stainless Steel and heat treated to 46 Rockwell “C”. This gives the best combination of stiffness and corrosion resistance. The front of all shafts are threaded with a 5/16” fine thread with a machined shoulder section that mates with the inside of the spear tip adapter, providing maximum strength to the connection. The important threading operation is done on a Lathe to insure the adapters and tips will screw on straight.

All 5/16” shafts have three cocking tabs or “fins” while the 3/8” shafts all have four. The fin edges are rounded and polished to increase the life of “cord” type wishbones and the forward fins on all shafts have a radiused hole for shooting line attachment.

Finally, the shafts are precision straightened to a maximum deviation of five thousandths of an inch. This time consuming process accounts for about 35% of the manufacturing cost of Alexander spear shafts and is the reason why other manufacturers just “eyeball” their shafts for straightness.

Precision shaft straightening service is also offered to all divers whose shafts have been bent by fish or accident.
